Riverside

Overview

Riverside Campus, located in southeast Austin, has several different programs that are unique to the location. A large section of the Computer Aided Design (CAD) classes, specifically in the Automotive and Heating and Air Conditioning courses are at Riverside. These classes help students learn the skills they need to find employment and succeed in the heating, air conditioning and refrigeration fields. If using heat to fuse two pieces of metal together or overseeing the construction of large buildings is your thing, the Welding and Construction Management classes are also taught on this campus. For students who want a certificate in Jewelry Making, Riverside is your campus. Many of the Kinesiology classes are based there as well. For the highly motivated, the ACC Honors program recently relocated to this campus. Built on the grounds of what used to be Austin Country Club, Riverside campus is also the only campus with its very own golf course.

Youth Financial Education Coordinators Kelsey Balcaitis and Jeannette Freitag welcomed RB Savings Challenge contestants Crystle Castro, Ulises Garcia and Brooke Deitrick to the final fall Riverside Coffee Chat in the lounge, with others totaling 11 participants. They reviewed their goals and strategies from previous sessions and meetings with their finance coaches.  Holiday budgeting and Black Friday bargains (the joy of the $10 dollar coffee pot) discussions revealed that most had bought items for themselves and not Christmas presents.

Kelsey outlined a context for what really constitutes a financial emergency and methods for dealing with these events. Medical emergencies are the leading cause of young people having to file for bankruptcy.
Our special guest, accounting professor David Floyd, discussed health savings accounts and pre-tax set-aside programs for your paycheck, and various types of short-term disability insurance to help deal with health issues. He...

Youth Financial Education Coordinators Kelsey Balcaitis and Jeannette Freitag welcomed RB Savings Challenge contestants Crystle Castro and Ulises Garcia to the second Riverside Coffee Chat in the lounge, with others totaling 6 participants. They reviewed their goals and strategies and continued the discussion about credit and debt from the previous evening’s workshop at Rio Grande.

Kelsey mentioned the current trend of employers (with your approval) pulling your credit record—they can get general information but not your actual credit score.

Student loans, grants and work-study options were re-visited with new students in the lounge, and the subject of exceptions and military deferments with loan payback options were brought up. Local to Austin group Cornerstone Financial Education and Amplify Credit Union were mentioned as excellent resources to research.

This week 85 students gathered at Riverside to learn about study abroad with Unity Jam - Student Life for Study Abroad. The theme country was Belize; students were able to taste food and candy from that country as well as receive information on how they could study abroad. Various vendors came to the event, including representatives from Academic Programs International (API), International Studies Abroad (ISA), Sol Education Abroad, and our own ACC International Programs. Engage Dance Team performed and Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) also had a table at the event.
